Best Answering Service for Plumbers (2026): 12 Options, Real Prices
Natalie Gelfand is the founder of LeadFix AI in Los Angeles. She builds and runs AI receptionists for plumbing, HVAC, roofing, and restoration companies, and ran the after-hours voicemail test cited in this post. LeadFix AI is one of the 12 options below, in its own clearly labeled section.
Short answer: the best answering service for plumbers depends on two things: do you want a real person or AI on the phone, and do you want to set it up yourself. For live people with emergency dispatch, PATLive. For cheap AI you set up yourself, Rosie or Goodcall. For a new phone system with AI built in, Allo. If you'd rather have it built and run for you, that's what my company, LeadFix AI, does (more on that after the list).
Why it matters: in September I called 25 Los Angeles contractors between 7 and 8 PM, plumbers included. 20 of them sent me to voicemail. And Invoca's data shows fewer than 3 in 100 callers leave a voicemail for a home service business. They call the next plumber.
Key Takeaways
- Allo is best for small crews that want a new business phone system with an AI receptionist added on. $32 a seat plus $32 for the AI receptionist, billed yearly.
- Rosie is best for solo plumbers who want a cheap AI answering service on top of the phone they already have. $49/month for 250 minutes, but booking starts on the $149 plan.
- Goodcall is best for shops with lots of repeat callers. It bills per different caller, never per minute, from $79/month.
- Quo Sona, Nextiva XBert, and RingCentral AIR make sense if you already use that phone system. Each is an AI add-on with its own call or interaction limits.
- PATLive is the best live (human) option for emergencies, with emergency dispatch and 14 days free. Smith.ai, Ruby, MAP, and Specialty cover the rest of the live market, from $44 to $1,725 a month.
- LeadFix AI (my company) is for plumbers who don't want to set up or manage anything: $597/month flat plus $1,797 setup, built and run for you.
Why Plumbers Need an Answering Service
You're under a kitchen sink at 7 PM. Your phone buzzes. Then again. By the time you dry your hands, the homeowner with water coming through the ceiling has already called the next plumber on Google.
An answering service for plumbers picks up those calls. The good ones book the job or get the emergency to your on-call phone. The cheap ones take a message.
Missed calls by the numbers
- Only 52% of calls to home services businesses reach a person, per Invoca's 2026 Home Services Benchmarks report.
- Fewer than 3 in 100 callers sent to voicemail leave a message (Invoca).
- 55% of home services businesses don't ask the caller to book the job, even when they do answer (Invoca, 2026).
- 20 of 25 Los Angeles contractors I called between 7 and 8 PM sent me to voicemail (my September 2026 test).
New in 2026: Google can charge you for calls you miss
If you run Google Local Services Ads, this one matters. Since October 1, 2026, a missed call during business hours can count as a charged lead if the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds (Search Engine Watch). Before, you paid for calls you answered. Now an unanswered phone can cost you the lead and the ad fee.
In this guide, I compare 12 options: six AI answering services (Allo, Rosie, Goodcall, Quo Sona, Nextiva XBert, RingCentral AIR), five live answering services (PATLive, Smith.ai, Ruby, MAP Communications, Specialty Answering Service), and my own company, LeadFix AI, in its own section after the list.
Every price below comes from the company's own pricing page, checked October 11, 2026. Where a company doesn't publish a number, I say so.

How to Choose a Plumbing Answering Service
Before the reviews, here's what matters most for a plumbing business.
- Pricing model and total cost. Some services charge a flat monthly rate. Others bill per minute, per call, per interaction, or per different caller. Plumbing calls spike in a freeze or a storm, and per-minute bills spike with them. Also count the phone system subscription some of these need on top.
- Emergency handling. A burst pipe at 9 PM needs to reach your on-call phone, not sit in an inbox until morning. Ask exactly what happens to an emergency call. And if a caller smells gas, the service should tell them to get out of the house and call the gas company or 911 first, before anything else.
- Appointment booking. If the call ends with a time on your calendar, the customer stops calling other plumbers. Not every service books on every plan.
- Standalone service vs. built into a phone system. A standalone service (Rosie, Goodcall, the live services, LeadFix AI) works with your current number through call forwarding. A phone system with AI built in (Allo, Quo, Nextiva, RingCentral) means switching your whole phone setup.
- Works with your job software. If you run Jobber, Housecall Pro, or ServiceTitan, ask whether bookings land there or only on a Google or Outlook calendar.
- Who sets it up and keeps it working. With self-serve AI tools, that's you: your services, your service area, your emergency rules, and every fix after. With a live service or a done-for-you service, it's them.
1. Allo: Best AI Receptionist Bundled With a Phone System
What is Allo?
Allo is a business phone system with an AI receptionist you can add on. Your calls, texts, recordings, and AI answering live in one app.
Why Allo is a good fit for plumbers
If you're also shopping for a new business phone, Allo bundles both. Its pricing page says the AI receptionist books appointments and takes messages.
The catch: You switch your phone system to get it. And the AI receptionist is a paid add-on, not included in the seat price.
Allo pricing
- Business seat (one user on the phone system): $32/month billed yearly, $45 billed monthly.
- AI Receptionist add-on: $32/month per agent billed yearly.
- Solo plan: $10/seat billed yearly, but it's waitlist only right now.
- No setup fees, 7-day free trial, no contracts.
For one plumber on yearly billing: about $64 a month for the phone and the AI receptionist.
2. Rosie: Cheapest Standalone AI Answering Service
What is Rosie?
Rosie is a standalone AI answering service. You keep your phone and forward calls to Rosie when you can't pick up.
Why Rosie is a good fit for plumbers
For a solo plumber who's comfortable setting things up, it's a cheap way to stop sending calls to voicemail. Try it for 7 days, no credit card.
Where it falls short: The $49 plan doesn't book appointments or transfer calls. Those start on the $149 plan. And minutes are capped at 250, 1,000, or 2,000 depending on plan.
Rosie pricing
- Professional: $49/month, 250 minutes.
- Scale: $149/month, 1,000 minutes, adds booking and warm transfers (passing a live caller straight to you).
- Growth: $299/month, 2,000 minutes.
3. Goodcall: Best for Shops With Lots of Repeat Callers
What is Goodcall?
Goodcall is a standalone AI answering service that bills per unique customer instead of per minute. It has a booking feature.
Why Goodcall is a good fit for plumbers
If the same homeowner calls three times about one leak, you pay once. Goodcall says it never meters minutes, so a long emergency call doesn't cost extra. You can build a free demo agent before you connect your number.
The downside: A month with lots of new customers costs more.
Goodcall pricing
- Starter: $79/month for 100 unique customers, then 79 cents each.
- Growth: $129/month for 500, then 26 cents.
- Scale: $299/month for 2,000, then 15 cents.
4. Quo Sona: Best for Crews Already on Quo
What is Quo Sona?
Quo (formerly OpenPhone) is a business phone system. Sona is its AI agent, sold as an add-on.
Why Quo Sona is a good fit for plumbers
If your crew already runs on Quo, Sona adds AI answering without switching anything. Quo's own page says Sona handles English, Spanish, and French. Every plan gets 10 Sona calls free, and there's a 7-day trial.
One limit: Sona doesn't book the appointment itself. It texts the caller a scheduling link. And you pay per call on top of the Quo plan.
Quo Sona pricing
- Quo plans: Starter $19/user, Business $27, Scale $36 a month, billed yearly.
- Sona: 10 calls free, then $25 for 40 calls, $49 for 100, $99 for 250, $199 for 600.
- Extra calls: $1.00 down to $0.45 each, depending on tier.
5. Nextiva XBert: Best for Shops Already on Nextiva
What is Nextiva XBert?
Nextiva is a business phone and communications platform. XBert is its AI agent, priced per interaction (each conversation XBert handles).
Why Nextiva XBert is a good fit for plumbers
If your shop already uses Nextiva, XBert adds AI answering that can book appointments. No contracts and a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Watch out for this: Per-interaction billing. A busy month means a bigger bill.
Nextiva XBert pricing
- Nextiva Core: $15/user/month.
- XBert: $99/month per 100 interactions, then $0.99 per interaction.
6. RingCentral AIR: Best for Shops Already on RingCentral
What is RingCentral AIR?
AIR is RingCentral's AI receptionist, an add-on to RingEX, RingCentral's business phone plan.
Why RingCentral AIR is a good fit for plumbers
For shops already on RingCentral, AIR adds AI answering that books into Google and Outlook calendars. RingCentral says it speaks Spanish and five other languages and can switch mid-call.
What to know first: You need a RingEX plan first, and RingCentral doesn't publish AIR's overage pricing on its pages.
RingCentral AIR pricing
- AIR: "Starts at $39."
- Plus a RingEX plan (price not shown on the AIR pages).
Prefer a real person on the line? The next five are live answering services: human receptionists instead of AI.
7. PATLive: Best Live Answering Service for Plumbing Emergencies
What is PATLive?
PATLive is a live answering service with US-based receptionists. It has a dedicated page for home services and trades.
Why PATLive is a good fit for plumbers
Emergency dispatch is the big one. A real person follows your emergency rules and gets the burst pipe to your on-call plumber. It also schedules appointments, and you get 14 days free to test it.
The downside: it's per-minute billing, so a freeze week costs more than a quiet one.
PATLive pricing
- 50 minutes: $99/month. 100 minutes: $189. 200 minutes: $349.
- 300 minutes: $479. 500 minutes: $759.
- Pay as you go: $49/month plus $2.99 a minute.
- No setup fees, no contracts, 14 days free.
PATLive's own pricing page, October 11, 2026. See current prices.
8. Smith.ai: Best for Paying per Call Instead of per Minute
What is Smith.ai?
Smith.ai sells live receptionists billed per call, plus a separate AI receptionist with its own plans.
Why Smith.ai is a good fit for plumbers
Per-call billing means a long, messy emergency call costs the same as a quick one. The AI receptionist is free for up to 25 calls a month, so you can try it at no cost. No setup fees, month-to-month.
Where it falls short: live plans add up fast once you pass 90 calls, and booking an appointment costs $1.50 extra.
Smith.ai pricing
- Live: 30 calls $300, 90 calls $810, 300 calls $2,100 a month.
- Live overage: $11.50, $10.50, or $8.50 a call depending on plan.
- AI receptionist: free for 25 calls, Pro $150/month ($2.00 per call), Enterprise $500/month ($1.67 per call).
9. Ruby: Best Premium Live Receptionists
What is Ruby?
Ruby is a premium live receptionist service known for a polished, friendly phone voice.
Why Ruby is a good fit for plumbers
If your brand leans high-end and you want every caller greeted by a person, Ruby fits. Its receptionists can schedule appointments, and there are no setup fees.
Watch out for this: 50 minutes is only about 20 calls at 2.5 minutes each, and Ruby doesn't publish its overage rate.
Ruby pricing
- 50 minutes: $250/month. 100 minutes: $395.
- 200 minutes: $720. 500 minutes: $1,725.
Ruby's own pricing page, October 11, 2026. See current prices.
10. MAP Communications: Best for a Few Live-Answered Calls a Week
What is MAP Communications?
MAP Communications is a live answering service with a dedicated page for plumbers.
Why MAP Communications is a good fit for plumbers
The entry plan is $49 a month with every minute billed, so a slow shop pays only for the calls it actually gets. Free trial, no long-term contract.
One limit: its pricing page talks about message-taking, not booking. Ask if they can put jobs on your calendar.
MAP Communications pricing
- $49/month with 0 minutes included, every minute billed.
- Business: $179 for 125 minutes. Enterprise: $339 for 250. Premium: $649 for 500.
- Overage: $1.37 down to $1.28 a minute.
11. Specialty Answering Service: Cheapest Live Answering at Volume
What is Specialty Answering Service?
Specialty Answering Service is a live answering service with pages for HVAC and home services.
Why Specialty Answering Service is a good fit for plumbers
At around 300 minutes a month, it's the cheapest live option on this list. 14-day free trial, no contract.
The catch: its pricing page lists message-taking, not booking. Ask before you sign.
Specialty Answering Service pricing
- $44/month plus $1.54 a minute.
- 100 minutes $159, 220 minutes $269, 500 minutes $649.
12. LeadFix AI: Best Done-for-You Answering Service for Plumbers
This is my company, so read this section knowing that.
What is LeadFix AI?
LeadFix AI is a done-for-you answering service for contractors, based in Los Angeles. Lisa, our AI receptionist, answers every call 24/7 in English and Spanish.
The difference is who does the work. We build Lisa around your shop, test her after hours, listen to the recordings, and fix what she gets wrong. You don't log into a dashboard or write a script.
Why LeadFix AI is a good fit for plumbers
Lisa knows the difference between a slow drain and a burst pipe. She asks if water is running and if the caller can reach the shutoff.
Routine jobs go on your calendar while the customer is still on the phone, and the customer gets a text confirmation. Real emergencies (active water, sewage backup, gas smell, no reachable shutoff) go to your on-call phone by text with the name, number, address, and problem.
Pricing is flat. A freeze week with twice the calls costs the same as a quiet week.
The honest downside: It's not the cheapest option here. If you take a handful of calls a month, or you like setting up software yourself, a $49 tool costs less.
Why $597 and not $49?
Because every Lisa is custom-built for one business: yours. Rosie, Goodcall, and the other $49 to $149 tools are one-size-fits-all software. Every shop gets the same product and a login, then sets it up, tests it, and fixes it alone.
We build Lisa around your calls, your calendar, your rules, your workflow, your tools, your emergencies, and your follow-up. Then we run it for you. You set up nothing and learn no software.
The math is simple: Angi puts a typical burst pipe repair at about $400, and many plumbers add a $150 to $300 emergency fee on top. Catch two after-hours emergencies you would have missed, and the month is paid for. Only need nights and weekends covered? That plan is $497 a month.
Want to see your own number first? Try the missed call calculator, or call 818-699-9145 and hear Lisa take a plumbing call.
LeadFix AI pricing
- $597 a month, flat. No per-minute or per-call billing.
- $1,797 one-time setup.
- If Lisa doesn't book you a job in your first 14 days, your monthly fee pauses and we keep working free until she does.
Call 818-699-9145 and hear Lisa answer as a plumbing company. See how our answering service for plumbers works.
What It Really Costs at 120 Calls a Month
Starting prices don't tell you much. Here's what each option costs for a shop that sends about 120 calls a month to the service, around 300 minutes. I used each company's published plans and picked the cheapest way to cover that volume.
| Service | Monthly cost | How I got the number |
|---|---|---|
| Allo | $64 | One seat + AI receptionist add-on, both billed yearly. AI minute limits not shown |
| Goodcall | about $95 | $79 for 100 different callers + 20 more at 79 cents |
| Quo Sona | $118 | Starter $19 (billed yearly) + Sona $99 for 250 calls |
| Nextiva XBert | about $134 | Core $15 + $99 for 100 interactions + 20 at $0.99 |
| Rosie | $149 | Scale plan. The $49 plan covers only 250 minutes and doesn't book |
| Specialty Answering Service | $384 | $269 for 220 min + 80 min at $1.44 |
| MAP Communications | $403 | $339 for 250 min + 50 min at $1.28 |
| PATLive | $479 | 300-minute plan |
| LeadFix AI | $597 | Flat. Same price at 50 calls or 500. Built and run for you |
| Smith.ai (live) | $1,125 | $810 for 90 calls + 30 calls at $10.50, before booking fees |
| Ruby | $1,725 | 500-minute plan (overage rate not published) |
| RingCentral AIR | Not listed | From $39 + RingEX plan; volume pricing not shown |
Live people get expensive fast past a few hundred minutes. The AI tools under $150 are self-serve: you sign up, set them up, and fix them when they get something wrong.
What Each Type Does With a 9 PM Burst Pipe Call
Same call, five different outcomes. A homeowner calls at 9 PM. Water is coming through the kitchen ceiling.
- Voicemail: the call ends. The homeowner calls the next plumber on Google.
- Live message service: a person takes the name, number, and address and sends you a message. If nobody reads it tonight, the homeowner keeps calling around.
- Live service with emergency dispatch: a person follows your emergency rules and reaches your on-call plumber.
- Self-serve AI: it answers instantly. What happens next depends on how you set it up and which plan you're on. On some entry plans it can only take a message or send a link.
- Done-for-you AI: it answers instantly, asks if water is running and if the caller can reach the shutoff, texts your on-call phone the details, and tells the caller when to expect you.
Before you sign with anyone, call your own line at 9 PM with this exact scenario and listen.
Which Plumbing Answering Service Fits Your Shop Size?
- Solo plumber, one truck. Cost matters most. Rosie's $149 Scale plan if you want booking, Goodcall if the same customers call back a lot, or MAP and Specialty if you want a human on the few calls you miss.
- 2 to 5 trucks. Emergencies start to matter more than price. PATLive if you want people with emergency dispatch, Allo if you're replacing your phones anyway, LeadFix AI if nobody in the office wants to manage it.
- 5+ trucks or a busy dispatch line. Per-minute bills climb fast here. At 300 minutes, live services already run $380 to $480 a month, and Ruby runs $1,725 at 500. Look at flat pricing or per-caller billing, and make sure bookings land in your job software.
How to Set Up and Test It Before the First Freeze
Whatever you pick, set it up before the first cold snap, not during it.
- Write your emergency rules. Active water, sewage backup, no reachable shutoff: those go to your on-call phone now. Gas smell: caller leaves the house and calls the gas company or 911 first.
- List your services and service area. What you do, what you don't, and the zip codes you cover.
- Decide booking vs. message. Which jobs go straight on the calendar, and which need a callback from you.
- Set up call forwarding. Forward after a few rings during the day and every call after hours. Check it again after a phone or carrier change.
- Make three test calls at night. A burst pipe, a slow drain, and a caller outside your area. Listen to what happens on each one.
- Review the first two weeks. Read every message or listen to every recording, and fix the rules that went wrong.
Questions to Ask Any Plumbing Answering Service Before You Sign
- What counts as a billable minute, call, or interaction? Ask about spam, robocalls, and hang-ups.
- What happens to an emergency at night? Ask them to walk you through it, step by step.
- Does the call end with a booked time or a message?
- Does it book into my software? Ask to see a booking land in Jobber, Housecall Pro, or ServiceTitan if you use one.
- Is Spanish included? More on bilingual answering for contractors.
- Who fixes it when it gets something wrong?
Which Plumbing Answering Service Should You Pick?
Choosing a plumber answering service comes down to three questions:
- Do you want a real person or AI on the line?
- Do you want to set it up and maintain it yourself?
- How many calls do you send it in a busy month?
If you want it handled, with calls answered, emergencies sent to your phone, and jobs booked without you touching software, LeadFix AI is built for that at a flat $597 a month.
If you're switching phone systems anyway, Allo bundles a phone and an AI receptionist for about $64 a month. If you'd rather keep your phone and set something up yourself, Rosie ($149 for booking) and Goodcall (from $79) are the standalone AI picks.
If you're already on Quo, Nextiva, or RingCentral, their AI add-ons save you a switch, but watch the per-call and per-interaction billing in busy months.
If you want a real person, PATLive has emergency dispatch, Specialty and MAP are the cheapest, and Ruby is the premium pick.
The one choice that costs you jobs is no choice. In my test, 20 out of 25 contractors were still sending 7 PM calls to voicemail.
Hear Lisa Take a Plumbing Call
Call 818-699-9145 and pretend your water heater just burst. If Lisa doesn't book you a job in 14 days, your fee pauses until she does.
See How It Works →FAQ About Answering Services for Plumbers
What Is the Best Answering Service for Plumbers?
There's no single best one. For live people with emergency dispatch, PATLive. For a phone system with AI built in, Allo. For cheap standalone AI you set up yourself, Rosie or Goodcall. For a service that's built and run for you, LeadFix AI (my company).
How Much Does an Answering Service Cost for a Plumbing Company?
AI tools start at $49 to $79 a month, and around $95 to $150 at 120 calls a month. Live services land around $380 to $480 at 300 minutes, and premium live services like Ruby run up to $1,725. LeadFix AI is $597 a month flat plus $1,797 setup.
Is Per-Minute or Flat Pricing Better for a Plumbing Company?
Per-minute is cheaper if you get only a few calls a week. Flat pricing is safer when calls spike in a freeze or storm, because your bill doesn't spike with them.
Can an AI Answering Service Handle Plumbing Emergencies?
A well-set-up one can. It should ask if water is running and if the caller can reach the shutoff, then send real emergencies to your on-call phone right away. One that only takes messages can't.
Should a Plumber Use a Live Answering Service or AI?
Live people handle unusual calls well but cost more per minute and can put callers on hold. AI answers every call instantly and costs less, but it has to be set up for plumbing and checked. After hours, either one beats voicemail.
Do I Have to Change My Phone Number?
Not with a standalone service. Rosie, Goodcall, LeadFix AI, and the live services work by forwarding your existing number. Allo, Quo, Nextiva, and RingCentral are phone systems, so you'd move your phone service to them.
Do Plumbing Answering Services Work With Jobber, ServiceTitan, or Housecall Pro?
It depends on the service and the plan. Some book straight into your field service software, some only into a Google or Outlook calendar, and some just send you a message. Before you sign, ask them to show you a test booking landing in your software.
What Should an Answering Service Do When a Caller Smells Gas?
Tell the caller to leave the house right away and call the gas company or 911 from outside. Then alert your on-call plumber. A gas smell should never be booked like a routine job.
Does Google Charge Plumbers for Missed Local Services Ads Calls?
Yes, since October 1, 2026. A missed call during business hours can be charged as a lead if the caller waits on the line for more than 20 seconds. If you run Local Services Ads, an answering service now protects your ad budget as well as your jobs.
Is There a Free Answering Service for Plumbers?
Not a full one, but you can test several for free. Smith.ai's AI receptionist is free for 25 calls a month, every Quo plan includes 10 free Sona calls, Rosie has a 7-day trial, and PATLive and Specialty Answering Service each give you 14 days free.
